As you may remember from an earlier post (about a week ago) Ainsley had a day (or about 7 hours) without her CPAP. The CPAP is the device that provides air pressure to help her lungs stay inflated. After about 7 hours it became clear that she still needed that support and the doctors made the decision to put her back on CPAP.
Well, today after a good week, the doctors and NNPs decided to try again. With the maturation of the lungs in preemies, it is difficult to tell exactly when a baby is ready to breath without support. Each child is so different, has a different set of circumstances, and develops at his/her own rate.
Today at around 11am Ainsley was taken off the CPAP and put on a high flow nasal cannula. This device also provides air pressure, but is much less invasive. We will post some pictures so you can see the difference. (There are some pictures of the previous time she was off CPAP in earlier posts). Also, the nasal cannula is one more step towards being off respiratory support.
Ainsley has done well so far with the change. However, we know this is a process and she may not be quite ready. We are hopeful!
Ainsley's Highlights this Week:
- Growing girl - now 4 1/4 pounds!
- Enjoying her big girl crib -
- Maintaining her temp (one of four things she needs to do to go home)
- Off the CPAP
- Practicing breast feeding
- Wearing clothes - too cute!
