Day of Life 15 & 16

Yesterday we had a rough day again.  The day started off well, but then after rounds we were informed that the pathology report on the placenta had come back showing that there had been an infection in both the placenta and the cord.  We then became worried that Ainsley might also be infected, therefore the doctors ordered a lab to test to find out.  They also stated that she was borderline anemic (her red blood cell count was low), in preemies this type of anemia is called anemia of prematurity.  What it means is that she has not yet started to create her own red blood cells.  Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen in the bloodstream.  The doctors said that her levels would continue to drop and informed us that she would need a blood transfusion.  They also stated that the blood transfusion may help with the increase in apneas and bradys we had been seeing over the last couple of days.

Later that afternoon we received the results from the lab that Ainsley did not have an infection, which was fantastic news.  The transfusion began shortly afterwards and lasted about 3hrs, everything went very smoothly.

Already that night we thought we began to see an improvement in her apneas and bradys.  We went to bed feeling much better about her health.

Today, DOL 16, we are fairly certain that the transfusion had a positive impact on her apneas and bradys.  She had a great day and was able to rest along with mommy!

Oh, Heather, Brandon and Ainsley, I'm praying for a good Sunday for the three of you. I can only imagine how emotionally exhausted you must be. I wish I could fast forward life several months for you. I love each of you!
