16.15" long
Ainsley has been doing fairly well over the last couple of days. We have still had some episodes with As and Bs (apneas and bradys), however they seem to be getting better. One way they measure that is whether or not she needs stimulation to pull out of an episode. There are self resolved and stimulation required types of As and Bs. She is still on a CPAP of four cm, there is still some talk of moving her back to five as she has had more desats in days 15-17, however yesterday and today (so far) have been better.
Today they ordered a caffeine trough, to test how quickly she is metabolizing the caffeine. If her levels are low they can up her dose to see if that will continue to improve her episodes. If her caffeine levels are still high then they may do a chest x-ray to see if her lungs are expanding completely. If the lungs are expanding appropriately then she will stay at four if not she will possibly move back to five.
We have definitely been experiencing the "two steps forward, one step back" scenario so common in the NICU. The staff constantly reminds us that this is typical and to be expected. It is easy to know this in your head, but a very different thing to know it in your heart. We are thankful for the reminders that our dear Ainsley is acting her age and that it will take time for her to develop. It is just difficult at times to be patient.
However, we are still thrilled and impressed with her progress. She is still gaining weight almost every day, growing, and tolerating her feeds. Ainsley is such a tough girl. It has been neat to see a bit more of her personality as she has gotten older. She is more feisty: kicking her legs as Daddy changes her, doing push-ups on Mommy when she is uncomfortable, pulling out her CPAP, kicking the RTs (respiratory therapist) when they do nose care, and pulling our her OG (feeding) tube.
Here are some pictures from the last few days.
