So, it is back to CPAP for at least a few days to help re-recruit her alveoli (alveoli are the primary gas exchange units of the lungs). Then when the doctors/NNPs feel like she is ready we will try again. As we have mentioned before there is no way to know when/if a baby is ready to go off of CPAP - instead the doctors watch for signs that she/he is ready and then see how she does. We have been told that it often takes a few days to see if he/she is ready, the signs (desaturation of oxygen levels, more apnea or bradys) show up and let you know that the alveoli have collapsed and he/she is struggling to get enough oxygen.
It was difficult to see Ainsley put back on CPAP. It feels like a step backward. But of course if she needs the support we absolutely want her to have it. The staff have reminded us that many times babies at Ainsley's gestation go on and off CPAP as their lungs are maturing.
Also, this time she was able to be off of CPAP for three days and last time she was off for only about seven hours. We so enjoyed seeing her face without the hat and extra tubes as well as the ease of picking her up. And so, we are learning to be patient.
Here are a couple of pictures from her mini-vacation from the CPAP. You can she how big she is getting - she is up to 4lbs 10.8oz! Keep it up baby girl!!
